Request from a Jobless Nursing Graduate Who Failed the Exam

I’ve read your article in panorama last Sunday about our jobless nurses.

I’m a nursing graduate also, but unluckily did not pass the board exam.

It was so hard for us to look for a job here and abroad.I hope that PRC can give us a certificate even as a health care allied, like as caregiver, because we finished a 4-year course than that of a caregiver. Hoping that in your ” Our Times”, they will give us a chance to work abroad like in home care. Life in the Philippines, so grabe, everything rises and no job for us. I hope you can help us or i mean ,us, jobless nurses , with board or no board exam find a job abroad as caregiver to help our parents/family.

Hi Ma’am Susan Ople! I’ve read your column from the Philippine Panorama and I commend you for giving us nurses support in these issues.

I am also a BSN graduate batch 2008 and I’ve just passed the recently held June 2008 Phil. Nursing licensure examination. I’m currently waiting for the release of my prof. license and am hunting for jobs locally to gain experience.

This is in response to Mr. Jose Ledesma Santos’ statement. I somehow agree with Mr. JLS’ request on the release of a Certificate of completion of a BS degree. I understand you were petitioning for something like this: http://prc.gov.ph/registrationservices.asp?svc_id=4 ?

In other countries, mere completion of a 2-year program would grant you a certificate as an associate. This enables assoc. graduates to work as practical nurses while they save money for the next set of courses. But these careers also have their own examinations, an example is the NCLEX-PN, which is different from the NCLEX-RN.

In addition to that, in some states in the U.S.A., BSN graduates are allowed to work even without passing the NCLEX yet. Provided that they apply and pay for the Interim Permit to work under the supervision of a licensed nurse. (From the California Board of Nursing Website)

For now, my suggestion to Mr. JLS, if he has just taken the PNLE once, he could give it another shot. We cannot deny the fact that employers prioritize those who are licensed, especially in abroad, wherein they value experience you gain in work. Another, there are other jobs that are not picky with their employees. Having finished a 4 yr Bachelor of Science program is already an edge during job seeking. There are also jobs that you could still practice and hone your skills as a BSN. You could do this in the meantime while preparing for your next examination.

That’s about all I can share for now. I wish the best of everything for us, BSN graduates and RNs!
