[...] Presidential Economic Adviser and Albay Governor Jose Salceda, in this news article, perfectly articulates the idea that has been on my mind since the onset of this skyrocketing oil price tax debate — To tax or not to tax? To retain or to remove the E-VAT altogether? This idea is to “reduce” (in Salceda’s term “cap” — thus the acronym “C-VAT”) the VAT imposed on oil. As I have expressed in Ms. Susan “Toots” Ople’s article about Sen. Mar Roxas’s interview regarding his recommendation in this issue, I feel that instead of imposing one over the other, why not reach some sort of “common ground” for both parties — those asking for the scrapping of E-VAT and those economic gurus in the government (or should I say the government collectively) by simply “reducing” the tax from the current 12% to a more acceptable and manageable percentage? Reduce it to half or 2/3 perhaps? I’m not an economic expert so I can’t really compute for this but at least you get the picture. [...]

hello ms. toots!
sen. mar roxas's suggestion is valid and possible. i myself had quite the same stand with regards to this issue, specially on "the times have changed, and we must review this evat and align it with what's required by the current situation" part. however, i'm not a purist on this issue, meaning i am also aware of the repercussions of the abrupt scrapping of the evat on oil, at least owing to the fact that these "somehow-efficient-although-painful" collections has significantly reduced our foreign debt and has kept us afloat probably until now. sure, we can always say "use the money stolen from the govt by corrupt officials instead, let's not use tax collections". in theory, that's good if that happens, but are we gonna wait for it? we can't expect those people to just come forward and return squandered funds just like that. we don't have that luxury (of waiting. we are pressed with time. so, in essence, i am for reduction of this tax but not total scrapping. i think removing evat altogether is like "throwing the baby with the bathwater". i guess in these trying times, we must open ourselves to solutions that are not too conservative yet not too liberal either..why introduce extreme measures when we can actually moderate it, tweak policies a little to suit the "needs of the times".. i'm no economic expert, however, so i guess i leave it to those people to compute it for themselves.. my two cents. :)

May point naman talaga si Sen. Mar. Kung patuloy na magmamatigas ang Malacanang, aba, wala talagang mangyayari dito. Patuloy lang na dadagdagan ng gobyerno yung paghihirap ng mga tao kahit gaano pa karami iyong subsidies na ilalabas nila. The best way is to remove yung VAT sa nagpapabigat sa pasanin ng mga mamamayan.

Maganda rin iyong direcktang kinakausap ni Sen. Mar iyong mga taong dapat kumilos hinggil dito gaya ng Pangulo at si Budget Secretary.

[...] Here’s something interesting - Senator Mar Roxas is really pushing for the suspension of VAT on oil. Like what I said in my previous post, this will give conusmers some relief in the on-going global gas crisis. I got this transcript from my Tita’s post in her blog. There are some really good insights in it so I’d like to share it with everyone, especially since the gas issue is one of the most pressing problems we have as a nation. Transcript of Senator Mar Roxas’ interview on DWIZ with Cely Bueno July 5, 2008 5:00 p.m. [...]
